Jefferson city, Missouri -- Secretary of State Robin Carnahan today announced that the St. Louis Public Library was awarded a $3500 grant through the "Every Child Ready to Read @ your library" grant program to address early literacy in the community.
Carnahan awarded more than $13,000 to eleven public libraries across the state through the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) "Every Child Ready to Read @ your library" grant program.
The grants provide funding for libraries to purchase the "Every Child Ready to Read" training kit available through the American Library Association and additional resources necessary to conduct parent and caregiver workshops. Public libraries will work with community partners to plan, promote and conduct a minimum of three parent workshops on helping children get ready to read.
"Preparing children to read is such an important responsibility for parents and caregivers. I'm pleased that we can partner with local libraries to provide resources to help them be successful in their efforts to provide children with skills that will serve them well throughout their lifetime," said Carnahan.
Through the "Every Child Ready to Read @ your library" funds, public libraries can conduct early literacy workshops for parents and caregivers of children birth through age five; identify and collaborate with community partners to reach new and underserved parents and caregivers and promote the public library staff as early literacy experts.
By partnering with the State Library to offer coordinated programs to help parents and caregivers prepare young children to read, local libraries make an impact and reap the rewards of successful students locally.
