How to Become a Productive High School Student

(By Dan Zeng from Clayton High School) On Sunday, May 2, 2010, high school students Jenny Liu, Jack Linshi, JJ Liu and Chi Zeng gave students and parents a clear window into the exciting lives of high school students during a seminar at the St. Louis Modern Chinese School. The team of four covered a wide array of issues from balancing schoolwork with the internet to applying to college. Each of the four presenters specialized in a specific area.

Jenny Liu thinks that the activities that are most important to her and that have contributed most to her identity as a prospective student are violin, art, and math/science competitions. She showed prospective high school students and parents how to effectively manage time in high school, spend their time engaging in extracurricular and volunteer activities that they truly enjoy doing, building strong peer relations and gaining important social skills.

Jack Linshi is heavily involved in the fine arts. He has been shown in local, national, and international juried shows, has won over 10 international and national awards, and has had work published in nationally and internationally circulating books and magazines. Jack plans to study the arts and social sciences at Yale University in the fall. Jack talked about how to efficiently prepare for the SAT and ACT.JJ Liu is her school yearbook editor-in-chief. She enjoys web designing, piano, painting and drawing, table tennis and martial arts. She will study computer science at Stanford. JJ gave audience members a comprehensive overview of the rigorous college application process. The seminar organizer, Chi Zeng, shared his substantial experience on how to effectively use summer time to join internships and gain valuable pre-college experience. He emphasized the importance of focusing on a few activities beneficial to the community and really showing passion to these activities by interning over the summer. Chi plans to focus his passion in technology and US-Chinese relations at Harvard.

Audience members reacted to the seminar with great enthusiasm, asking countless questions about SAT/ACT, AP classes, high school clubs, students¡¦ social lives, and high school life in general. Not only did the seminar give students and parents a clear window into the lives of high school students, but audience members were greatly captivated by their resourceful presentation and achievements. We wish these four young students the best of luck in their future careers. The St. Louis Modern Chinese School provides a nurturing avenue for students of all ages and ethnic backgrounds to learn the Chinese language and share Chinese culture. It currently has over 400 students enrolled, making it one of the largest Chinese language schools in the United States.
