OCA Congratulates the 2010 OCA-Verizon College Scholars

        Washington, D.C. - OCA, a national organization with 80 chapters and affiliates dedicated to advancing the social, political, and economic well-being of Asian Pacific Americans (APAs), is pleased to announce the 10 winners of the OCA-Verizon College Scholarship. The scholarship awards $2,000 to college students entering their third or fourth year of undergraduate studies who have financial need and who demonstrate academic achievement in the fields of technology, engineering, computer science, and business.

        "Verizon has a long history of investing in the Asian Pacific American community," said Patrick Gaston, President of the Verizon Foundation. "Education is the key to providing a promising future for our students and our nation, and we are proud to partner with OCA to recognize the academic works of these 10 scholarship winners."

        "OCA understands the importance of financially supporting students throughout their college career and is proud to partner with Verizon to provide this unique scholarship opportunity," said OCA National President Ken Lee. "We know that the OCA-Verizon College scholars will continue to excel in their fields and use their skills and talents to contribute to the 21st century workforce."

        Since 2002, OCA has partnered with the Verizon Foundation to award 195 scholarships for a total amount of $390,000, including $20,000 in 2010.

        The Verizon Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Verizon Communications, supports the advancement of literacy and K-12 education through its free educational website, Verizon Thinkfinity (www.thinkfinity.org), and fosters awareness and prevention of domestic violence. In 2009, the Verizon Foundation awarded $67.9 million in grants to nonprofit agencies in the U.S. and abroad.
