leo2009liu@gmail.com

The Math League announced Missouri Mathematics League annual Grade 6-7-8 Results on March 20, 2017. St. Louis Modern Chinese School (SLMCS, 圣路易现代中文学校) dominated the 2017 Grade 8 math contest for Missouri Mathematics League and St Louis Region for both individuals and school competition. Below is a group photo of 10 winners, Yingwen Huang, President of SLMCS, Xiaodong Zhu, Principal of Talent School, and Leo Liu, Math Class Instructor and Math League Advisor.

For the individual contest category, SLMCS has 14 students on the top 36 list (including the top 2). On the school contest category, the Math League is the only math competition that allows after-school learning center, like SLMCS, to participate the contest as a school, but only the top two regular schools are eligible to win an engraved plaque for this category. However, among the 21 schools participating the grade 8 contest, the SLMCS top 5 students scored 139 points and beat the #1 school, Jefferson Middle School, Columbia, by 10 points in the Missouri Mathematics League. Furthermore, SLMCS sweeps the St Louis Region by beating the #1 Parkway Central Middle School by 27 points, and all top 5 students in this region are from SLMCS as shown below for their overall ranking and grade level.

Below is a complete list of the 14 students on the top 36 list, and a certificate will be awarded to each winner on May 13 SLMCS year-end Gala. You could find the complete list and more details of the contest on the link below:

Note that the top 3 students in the Missouri Mathematics League will be awarded an engraved plaque in June, and students scored 31 or higher are invited to the Sixth Annual Math International Summer Tournament at The College of New Jersey from July 25th through July 30th. Louis Li and Kevin Tang will get an engraved plaque in June, and Louis Li is eligible to enter the Sixth Annual Math International Summer Tournament.

SLMCS offered math classes for grades 1-8 and high school students, and equipped the classroom with internet and big TV screen starting fall 2016. Dr. Leo Liu joined the SLMCS in fall 2015 for two math classes: High School Math Competition and Grade 8 Math. He added the Middle School Math Competition class in fall 2016, and it is amazing that 8 out of 11 students from this class are on the top 36 list. Dr. Liu also got two excellent Teaching Assistants, Tong Zhao and Arron Zheng, for his three math classes since fall 2016. Both Teaching Assistants were invited to American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME, a gateway to more privileged math contest, and potentially US Math Team) by passing an AMC 10 or 12 contest. Mr. Zhao is the top gun for the Math League High School Contest via his regular school, and conducted an AMC seminar to share his insight and tips last December. Below is a photo of the classroom with Mr. Zhao and Dr. Liu.

If you want to improve your math skills or win Math League or AMC contests, SLMCS will have a good math class for you.

Dr. Liu planned to offer Grade 8 (MA8) and 3 Math Competition classes (MC8, MC10, and MC12) this coming fall, and if you are interested in learning more about his class(es), please contact him, leo2009liu@gmail.com, before April 16 for attending a parent meeting planned on April 30. You could find more information about the class, textbook, and pre-req for math contest classes on Dr. Liu’s teacher page:
