“Every year, students at Washington University in St. Louis put on a grand show to celebrate the Lunar New Year and promote Asian culture. 2018 will be the 22nd anniversary of our event. The show includes many colorful performances, from Chinese yo-yo, Lion dance, and Samulnori, to Standing drums, and Dai Umbrella, and Tinikling. All performances are woven together by a play which will tell a story of our theme, this year, “Side by Side”.
With nearly 200 participants, the Lunar New Year Festival is WashU’s largest completely student run production. Every year just weeks after the show, the exec board is chosen for the following year’s show. From there, our choreographers are selected, auditions are held, and rehearsals are planned starting in early October. Every detail of the show you will see – from the choreography and the lighting and the music, to the programs and promotional artwork – is planned, designed, and executed by the students themselves.
With our show we hope to showcase Asian culture from a traditional and modern perspective, instilling a sense of pride in our heritage and giving Washington University and the St. Louis community a better understanding of Asian culture.
In addition to our show, each year, LNYF partners with a philanthropy as a way to give back to our community. This year, all proceeds from our show will go to Food Outreach, a program which provides nutritional support to low income people living with HIV/AIDS. We hope that together through charity we can support their mission and cause.
The show will take place February 2 at 7pm, and February 3th at 2pm and 7pm at Edison Theatre at Washington University. Tickets are $10 each and are available for purchase online at http://edison.wustl.edu/event/ or at the box office in Mallinckrodt Center at Washington University from 10-4 Monday through Friday, or 10-2 on Saturday.”
