Dear Friends:
There is no doubt that the damage and hardship brought upon our
fellow Americans by Katrina Hurricane rivals the Tsunami disaster
a few months ago in Asia. In fact, the suffering of people may linger
much longer as the region will be under water for many more months
to come.
I am sure each one of the organizations I included in this email
is planning or is already mobilized to contribute to those hundreds
of thousands in desperate need. It is a matter of life or death.
Our St. Louis Chinese Community has always been in the forefront
to extend our helping hand whether the disaster is in Taiwan due
to earthquake, in Hong Kong due to Bird Flu, in China due to SARS
or in Southeast Asia due to the Tsunami. But this time it is in
our homeland.
There are many relief organizations, such as the Red Cross, Salvation
Army, religious organizations, etc. Contributions from non-affiliated
organizations are usually directed to the Red Cross which is most
prepared to handle the disaster relief effort.
If you do normally remit your collective contribution from your
organization to the Red Cross, I suggest we all join hands and
do this in a united front by submitting our contribution together
at one time rather than separately in lesser amounts. Our combined
total will represent the generosity of our greater St. Louis Chinese
community and will be recognized, while the amount collected by
each organization will still be distinctively acknowledged.
In fact, for personal Income tax reporting purpose, Red Cross
will acknowledge every person's contribution individually.
I have contacted Mr. Jason Tang of OCA and Professor Hung Gay
Fung of 80/20 Initiative. They both agree this is an effective
way to mobilize our St. Louis Chinese community, resulting in
more participation and greater benefiting the relief effort. Since
I am just an individual, Jason Tang has graciously agreed to coordinate
and administrate the paper work.
With this coordinated approach:
1. I will serve as General Chairman and every head (Chairman
or President)
of each organization will be a Co-chair of this coalition.
2. Each organization will conduct or will continue to conduct
its' own
campaign for the Hurricane Katrina relief, keeping its' own record,
and collecting its donations.
3. There will only be one initial organizational meeting or luncheon
and one final meeting or
lunch to conclude the campaign. The initial meeting (about one
weekfrom now)will decide the closing date for the campaign.
4. There will be no expenses to be paid by any organization other
than your
normal hard work.
5. At the end of this campaign, we will document and jointly
present our
total contributions to the Red Cross. This will allow us to demonstrate
the united spirit for this worthy cause.
I am happy to let you know that as of this date, the following
organizations
have already accepted this invitation. There are:
* Organization of Chinese Americans/STL (OCA-STL)
* 80/20 Initiative/STL
* St. Louis Chinese Association (SLCA)
* St. Louis Modern (Language) School
* St. Louis Chinese Language School (pending Board Approroval)
* Mid-West Chinese American Science and Technology Association
(MCASTA)
* St. Louis Chinese Acadamy
* St. Louis Chinese Culture Association
* St. Louis Chinese American News
There are several others pending. I hope your organization will
also
join the coalition to demonstrate our unified spirit for this
worthy
cause by responding my request positively.
Due to the urgent nature of this matter, please reply on behalf
of your
organization prior to September 14 by Email to me at(kwangyeh@aol.com)with
copy to Jason Tang (Jason.Tang@ca-americas.com) who will coordinate
the administrative work of this coalition.
In the name of unity, I thank you for your cooperation.
