Andrews Academy hurricane relief effort

School began on Aug. 31, and the very next day we began talking about what we should do to raise funds for the Hurricane relief effort. One of our parents called with the idea of having a Mardis Gras type bead sale. Robin Charles, the mother of Kirby in 6th grade and Parker in 3rd grade, donated 4 gross of the beads. I had a meeting with our 6th graders about heading up the Andrews Academy relief effort and they were gung-ho for the idea of the sale, plus they had other ideas of their own about what to do to raise money. They collectively came up with the price of $1.00 for each necklace, and decided that the money should go to the American Red Cross. The 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Mary Mitchell, and I decided the hours of the sale and that we would run it Sept. 7-9. Many of the 6th graders made posters to advertise, and we had more 6th grade volunteers than we could use to sell the beads before and after school. I sent home a flyer with each child on Friday telling about the sale. In addition I talked to our headmaster, Mr. Joe Patterson, about having a special casual dress day for the teachers, for a $5.00 donation to the Red Cross. The teachers resonded with enthusiasm and we raised $278.00 from just our teaching staff. We also have a donation jar in the lobby for straight donations. So far, with these activities, we have raised over $1,600 and have sent off $608.00 in personal checks to the Red Cross. We will leave the jar in the lobby for the rest of the month. In October, we will have a 'hat Day" where students and teachers will pay $1.00 to wear a hat in school, and we will send 100% of those funds to the Red Cross also. So, our young people are very aware of the need of the displaced persons and they are so motivated to help. We have wonderful families at our school. These children are our future, and I believe that the children of Andrews Academy are learning the lessons of caring for others and will carry these humanitarian values with them their entire lives.
