Chesterfield Day School K-1 Students Celebrate Chinese New Year

Chesterfield Day School (CDS) K-1students celebrated Chinese New Year last weekend with a trip to a local Chinese restaurant. They also visited St. Louis Modern Chinese School, located at the Parkway South Middle School in Manchester where CDS K-1 teacher Cheryl Xing of Chesterfield and first-grader Madeleine Toskin of Webster Groves learned the Lion Dance. The dance, traditionally part of festivities like Chinese New Year, the openings of restaurants and weddings, is believed to bring luck and happiness.

Chesterfield Day School (CDS) kindergarten and first grade students celebrated the Year of the Dog last weekend with a trip to a local Chinese restaurant and a visit to St. Louis Modern Chinese School (SLMCS), located at Parkway South Middle School.
"It was a special way for the students to learn the culture and celebrate Chinese New Year, too," says CDS K-1 teacher Cheryl Xing.
The CDS students are currently studying the countries of Asia.

About 14 K-1 classmates and their families gathered at a local Chinese restaurant for a traditional Chinese meal. Afterward, eight families toured the Chinese school, visiting classes where SLMCS children were studying oil painting, Chinese drum, singing, dancing, three-dimensional arts and crafts, Wu Shu and Ping Pong.
