【時報訊】聖路易華裔社區為大學城72選區，有社區的女兒暱稱之州議員Maria Chappelle-Nadal競選連任募款會，3月8日下午二至三時，在聖市京園餐廳舉行，五十餘位華裔社區各界人士社團領袖與會，密蘇里州美國國會參議員Claire McCaskill以特別來賓身份應邀出席募款會，親切的與每一位參加人士握手致意。州議員Maria在會中報告州議會問政議事，為爭取密蘇里州老年人福利、為保障移民應有權利、為選區選民服務等著有績效，交出一張漂亮成績單，獲得所有與會人士讚揚，京園餐廳募款會當天提供精美豐盛之飲茶點心，招待各界貴賓。
Maria募款餐會由聖路易時報岳方濟主持，他首先感謝社區各界人士對這次募款會及對Maria之熱心支持，許多當天無法參加的朋友也將捐款支票事先郵寄，熱情感人。接著邀請聖路易郡圖書館委員戴慶齡博士致詞，戴慶齡博士與華裔社區許多人士自2004年起即協助Maria從政，自前副州長Joe Maxwell聯絡室主任到2004、2006年兩度參選州議員當選，尤其是Maria2004年首次參選僅以百餘票險勝，然而第二次2006年競選時即以大幅度領先對手，足見Maria在州議員任內表現獲得選民肯定。戴慶齡博士表示，某些候選人在募完款之後，就好像不見了，但是Maria多年來一直是華裔社區忠實的朋友和州議員，不但贏得華裔社區的喜愛，更獲得大家的慷慨支持。
Creve Coeur華裔市議員王恩隆(James Wang)接著致詞表示，Maria是一位堅守崗位、有立場、有見識的州議員，她照顧選區選民有目共睹，王恩隆市議員舉例指出，在聖市Delmar路的Crown Center皇冠老人中心裡，許多華裔耆老都能叫出Maria的名字，可見Maria照顧耆老，經常拜訪老人中心，聽取耆老意見之成績。
身為華裔，王恩隆市議員對移民權益有著深刻的感受，王恩隆市議員說，當他要登記參選Creve Coeur市市議員時，市政府竟然問他，你有權參選嗎?(因為他有著「移民」的面孔)，這種對移民之偏見誤解和成見，影響移民生活甚巨。王恩隆市議員說，我們需要一位瞭解華裔、瞭解移民的州議員，Maria是我們最佳的選擇。
在大家的掌聲中，Maria向大家作了十分鐘之州議員問政議事及選區選民服務工作報告，Maria指出，耆老健保福利、移民合法權益、中小企業經濟發展是她三項主要努力方向，並積極參與相關之委員會Maria表示，她自己病危年邁的祖母現在就住在老人院中，因此她對老人院之設施評估和規範管理，及對住在裏面的老人家和老人家的親屬們之各種影響感同身受，力爭耆老福利和健保是她努力不懈的目標。
在移民權益方面，Maria指出，愈來愈多的不合理立法逐漸壓縮移民的生存空間，密蘇里州近年來強化對移民要有合理文件之要求，甚至日前聯邦政府通過之「退稅」法案，如果移民沒有合法文件，即使你有繳稅合乎退稅標準密州仍然可以沒收你的退稅，這是不合理的剝奪移民權益，再如各項契約、租約也要檢查移民合法文件，在在都使移民生存受到影響。
Maria在州議會仗義直言，不畏強權，據理直言，力爭移民權益，為此受到本地區某反對移民組織之恐嚇威脅，Maria說，她簡直不敢相信，在2008年的今天，還會有這種反移民、恐嚇州議員之情事，Maria因此受到警方在省府傑佛森市24小時保護，但是這位勇敢的「社區女兒」，絲毫未改變她的立場和支持移民合法權益之態度。
雖然在某些議案上，Maria和國會參議員McCaskill有著不同的意見，但是這兩位女性議員在經過一段時間磨合後，成為至好的同黨夥伴。國會參議員McCaskill非常欣賞Maria的從政態和堅定問政理念，進而願意親自出席為Maria募款站臺，並與華裔社區人士會面。這是McCaskill參議員當選後第二次與華裔社區人士會面。McCaskill參議員聖路易辦公室聯絡人Michelle也以私人身份出席此次募款會，表達對Maria的支持和對華裔社區的關心。
McCaskill參議員致詞表示，京園餐廳是她熟悉的地方，因為當初參議員選舉時，她的聖路易競選辦公室就在京園餐廳的旁邊，同一個購物中心內。參議員McCaskill讚揚Maria是一位成功盡職的州議員，今天更是親眼看到大家對Maria的支持而深受感動。McCaskill說，誠實是一個政治人物的應有態度，誠實的面對議案，誠實的面對選民，才能贏得選民的支持。即將於三月下旬率團啟程赴中國大陸訪問，McCaskill參議員將力促密蘇里州與中國之間的經貿交流，促進密蘇里州經濟發展。她希望聖路易華裔社區經常和她保持聯系，透過她在聖路易的辦公室隨時反映民情輿論。
在McCaskill參議員致詞後，隨即進行問答時間，由現場來賓提出各項問題，由於McCaskill參議員還要趕赴當天下一行程。而於3時15分離開。Maria則繼續和會眾座談至4時許，始結束整個募款會活動。

St. Louis Chinese American Community Fundraising for State Rep. Maria Chappelle-Nadal
Missouri's U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill headlined a campaign fundraising event for Maria Chappelle-Nadal in her run for a third term as Missouri State Representative. The March 8th, 2008 event was organized by the St. Louis Chinese American News and held at the Mandarin House banquet room in Overland, Missouri.
McCaskill and other speakers introduced and recognized the contributions of the two-time incumbent whose district largely comprises of University City, Pagedale and Wellston. Chappell-Nadal's accomplishments and work towards betterment of state services to seniors and public schools was noted. Dr. Ching-ling Tai quipped that Chappelle-Nadal was "our daughter", a reference to Chappelle-Nadal's strong standing with the Chinese community. James Wang, Creve Coeur Council Member Ward II, revealed that Chappelle-Nadal was also a Missouri democratic party "Super-Delegate". Chappelle-Nadal jokingly acknowledged that she had been fielding a lot of calls from many important people but did not drop any hints as to which way she was leaning.
Senator McCaskill also fielded several questions from those present. In response to a question from the floor on whether Senate would overturn the President's veto of the ban on the use of water-boarding as an interrogative means, McCaskill indicated that the two-thirds vote needed to overcome a presidential veto was not attainable since Democrats only make 51 of the 100 senatorial seats. On the Air-Force's recent refueling super-tanker contract decision the senator cautioned against taking too parochial a view on that decision. Boeing's entry, she noted, was itself not entirely made in the U.S. Critics of Air Force decision have squarely denounced the choice of the Airbus based tanker as a loss for American industry and American jobs.
The Senator revealed that she would traveling to China later this month and meeting with Chinese authorities over various matters. In preparation for her meeting she encouraged the audience to forward any suggestions and ideas to her aide Michelle Sherod who was also present.
