St. Louis Area Ranks as 23rd Largest Export Market

The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday said new data shows St. Louis as the twenty-third-largest metropolitan export market in the United States through the first half of the year.

The Commerce Department said the St. Louis area had $4.9 billion in global marketplace sales, with 34 percent of St. Louis' merchandise going to countries that signed the North America Free Trade Agreement. Canada, South Korea and Mexico were among the leading destinations for St. Louis' goods.

Chemicals were the top St. Louis export for the first half of 2007, accounting for $954 million of exported goods, or 19 percent of the metropolitan area total, the department said. Other top exports were transportation equipment ($951 million, 19 percent); crop production ($658 million, 13 percent); and machinery, except electrical ($312 million, 6 percent).

On Monday, July 14, the U.S. Commerce Assistant Secretary David Bohigian, a native of St. Louis, announced new trade data that precisely measures merchandise export values for the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The St. Louis Metropolitan Area has earned a top 25 national ranking with regard to total export value. (Photo by SCANews.com)
