23rd National Catholic China Conference Planned for October 3 - 5, 2008 in Belleville, Illinois
"Experiencing Jesus Christ Through Chinese Eyes" is the theme of the upcoming national conference sponsored by the U.S. Catholic China Bureau. Speakers and participants will discuss how contemporary Chinese encounter Jesus Christ and how that encounter is being reflected through Chinese cultural, social, economic, intellectual, theological, artistic, and other perspectives. Speakers from China will enhance participants?understanding and appreciation of what is happening in mainland China regarding this vital topic. Although sponsored by a Catholic organization, the conference is open to anyone interested in the growth of religious faith in China.
Mr. Rob Gifford, London-based NPR correspondent and author of China Road, will be the keynote speaker. He has spent over twenty years in China and brings a wealth of information and insight to understanding contemporary China and its impact on religion. Dr Huang Jian-Bo, a sociologist from China who is presently a visiting scholar at Harvard University, will present the results of his research on the Attitudes of Chinese Youth Towards Religion and its implications for mainland Chinese society.
Reverend John Ren Da-hai and Sister Rong Li-na, both from Hebei province, and Reverend Peter Che Tian-zhi from Shandong province will report on their own experiences of how current socio-economic conditions in mainland China are impacting the faith and lives of Chinese Catholics and others.
Dr Jean-Paul Wiest, from the Beijing Center for Chinese Language and Culture, will report on the reaction of Chinese Catholics to last year’s Pastoral Letter from Pope Benedict XVI to the Church in China.
There will be many opportunities to interact with the presenters and other participants. Books and other resources will also be available. There will be a Chinese cultural program on Saturday evening. Bishop Ignatius Wang, who was born in China, will lead the worship service on Sunday morning to conclude the conference.
The conference will be held at Our Lady of the Snows Retreat and Conference Center in Belleville, Illinois, near to St. Louis MO. It is about a 50 minute ride by Metrolink from the airport in St. Louis. The conference begins Friday afternoon, October 3 and concludes at noon on Sunday, October 5.
