From Afar, Arch Coal Eyes Opportunity in China

Arch Coal Inc., based in Creve Coeur, will be test shipping coal from its mine in Wyoming to China, the world's largest coal consumer. In China, the coal will be test burned at power plants, and if the tests are successful, the company will continue delivering its coal to China. However, the growth of the U.S. dollar and the weak economy could make the domestic products more expensive. Other barriers include the long distance from Wyoming to China, port capacity, and the decreasing prices for coal exports. Lucky for Arch Coal, 80 percent of the electricity in China is produced with coal and the country is in high demand of the product.
