President-elect Barack Obama nominated St. Louis-native Steven Chu to be the next secretary of energy. Chu was born here in 1948, when his father, a chemical engineer, was teaching at Washington University. Chu earned his undergraduate degrees in physics and mathematics from the University of Rochester in 1970 and his Ph.D from UC Berkeley in 1976. In 1997, Chu shared the Nobel Prize in Physics for developing laser techniques to cool and trap atoms and molecules. He has pushed endlessly for more research to develop renewable and sustainable sources of energy. |
