St. Louis project to get $2.7 million in recovery funds

About $2.7 million in federal stimulus money will go to a project in the St. Louis Great Streets Initiative.

Rep. Russ Carnahan, a Democrat from St. Louis, was joined Wednesday by city aldermen and restaurant owners in the city's South Grand business district. They said the funds will be used to improve a section of South Grand and make it more pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly.Carnahan and Aldermen Jennifer Florida and Steve Conway said the redesign, which is still in the works, will improve safety and enhance the viability of surrounding neighborhoods and the strip's many international restaurants and other businesses.

The South Grand project is one of four in the St. Louis Great Streets Initiative. South Grand in St. Louis is getting $2.69 million in stimulus funding to make it friendlier to pedestrians. The money will go toward traffic signals, sidewalks and lighting. The plan also calls for reducing the number of traffic lanes on the street from four lanes to three.U.S. Rep. Russ Carnahan, D-Mo., is expected to speak at a news conference about the project Wednesday morning at Caf¨¦ Natasha. The project is part of East-West Gateway Council of Government¡¯s "Great Streets Initiative," which encourages the development of pedestrian-friendly business districts in St. Louis.

Final plans for the project must be approved by the Missouri Department of Transportation by March 2, 2010.Once the approval is in place, the City of St. Louis will work with MoDOT to advertise for bids and select a construction contractor. It is hoped that construction can start in late 2010.

The South Grand Community Improvement District held a public hearing and design charette detailing the scope of the project Aug. 12 at St. Elizabeth Academy on Arsenal Street.

U.S. Rep. Russ Camahan
