What:
This program will explore issues that impact Asian families in the St. Louis region. We will discuss Asian involvement in the community, the impact of Asian leadership, and breaking down barriers to communication. We will also discuss the needs of the Asian community and possible gaps in services in the St. Louis area.
Why:
Research shows that over the last decade, the foreign-born population in the United States has increased by 44%. 47 million people speak a language other than English at home, and an additional 21 million people have limited English proficiency. It is projected that minorities will make up nearly half of the country's population by 2050.
Immigrants are integral to Missouri's economy as workers and taxpayers. The Asian share of Missouri's population has grown from under one percent in 1990 to almost two percent, or 82,300 people, in 2007. It is important that we understand how different cultures interact in the workforce, in the community, and in social circles. This is part of a series of educational forums focusing on specific ethnic populations within the St. Louis area.

Who:
The purpose of United Way of Greater St. Louis' Multicultural Leadership Society is to stimulate involvement in and giving to United Way while connecting St. Louis' growing ethnic, racial, international, and diversity-minded individuals and groups. Created in 2009, the Multicultural Leadership Society creates a platform for and familiarizes individuals with other key leaders in the region and prepares them for their role in serving our community. The Multicultural Leadership Society also aligns with the increasing number of companies in the region who have multi-ethnic affinity groups, recognizing the added value internally and externally these groups create. The Multicultural Leadership Society is an opportunity to strengthen links to and within these communities.
