The International Institute's Festival of Nations always promises to delight audiences with multicultural performances from around the world. This year is no different - on August 27 and 28, COBU will take the stage at the Festival, which will be the first appearance in St. Louis for this New York City-based group.
COBU combines elements of a Japanese tradition - Taiko drumming - with American tap dancing. Instead of employing digital transcription, COBU creates its signature sounds organically using acoustic instruments. COBU's
motto, ance like drumming, drum like dancing, ?is inspired by the combined sounds of Japanese culture and New York. The troupe of Japanese-born dancers is led by Yako Miyamoto, who is currently a performer in the Off Broadway show “STOMP.?
In 2000, COBU was created as a Live Rhythm Performing Arts Group. Since then, they have performed at many major festivals throughout the United States, as well as around the world (during a Japan tour in 2008). COBU's performances have earned fantastic reviews from The New York Times, as well as other publications and reviews, which rave about the energy and excitement of the group.
Look for COBU, and many other music and dance groups, at the Festival of Nations in Tower Grove Park on August 27 and 28, 2011! For more information, please visit www.festivalofnationsstl.org.
