Comptroller Darlene Green Welcome the US-China Transportation Forum to the GTC

ST. LOUIS - Comptroller Darlene Green hosted Wednesday, January 11, 2012 the US-China Transportation Forum and tour at the Gateway Transportation Center. This event is a part of a conference between the two countries being held in St. Louis, January 10-12, 2012.
The U.S. delegation was led by USDOT Deputy Secretary John D. Porcari. The Chinese delegation was led by Vice Minister Xu Zuyyuan, who over sees maritime issues for the Ministry of Transportation. China specifically requested that the next Transportation Forum be held on the Mississippi River due to their interest in inland waterways and port development. Representatives from the federal government and MODOT wanted part of the forum and a tour done at the Gateway Transportation Center because of its success inbeing the region's premier multimodal facility. The GTC is managed by the Comptroller's Asset Management Office.
The United States Department of Transportation and the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic China jointly held the first Transportation Forum in Beijing, China on December 3, 2008. Due to common transportation challenges and desire to begin to discuss and develop productive solutions, the American Chinese governments recognized the need for a high level multi-modal transportation dialogue. In the spirit of that need, the US-China Transportation Forum was established.
The annual meeting reviews the progress achieved by the Transportation Forum Working Groups: Disaster Assistance; Urban Congestion; Hazardous Materials; and New Technologies in Transport Rail. At the 2010 forum the Ports and Inland Waterways Initiatives were added to share ideas and experiences on promoting and expanding inland water way networks to benefit economic development. |
