All Employees: Transportation and Warehousing: Couriers and Messengers (CES4349200001)
The transportation sector isn't that hard to understand. Let's fact it, most of the time employees in this profession are moving goods from point A to point B. It's an industry that keeps our country moving and puts nearly 3.9 million employees to work each day.

In the St. Louis area, this sector ranks No. 20 out of 857 metropolitan and micropolitan areas across the nation. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, St. Louis had 1,946 businesses and 41,286 employees as of 2009. Those employees were paid an average of $39,200. Kansas City had 1,487 businesses as of 2009, with its 40,156 employees making an average of $34,700.

On a national scale, the industry paid its 3.9 million employees a total of $154.52 billion in 2009, which translates to $39,700 per employee. There are about 186,000 transportation and warehousing firms across the country.

The transportation industry favored those who lived in Anchorage the most. Employees there made $66,200. It's followed by Yakima, Wash., at $56,700, Houma, La., at $56,000, and Bridgeport-Stamford, Conn., at $55,200.
