(August 15, 2012) The University of Missouri - St. Louis has raised more than $154 million through the Gateway for Greatness campaign ended June 30, Chancellor Thomas George announced today.

"Shock and awe is the best way to describe my reaction," George said in a statement. "Many people had suggested our alumni were too young and our economy too weak to support a major campaign. But our alumni, corporate and community leaders proved differently."

The seven-year campaign began in 2005 as a way to raise private support for scholarships, facilities, programs and faculty positions. The university raised more than $20 million for scholarships as part of the campaign. The Emerson Charitable Trust, Enterprise Holdings Foundation and the estate of Eugene and Alice Meehan all gave scholarships in excess of $1 million. Eugene Meehan had been a longtime UMSL faculty member. Nearly $60 million of the funding will go toward faculty, academic programs, libraries and research, the university said.

One of the beneficiaries of the campaign is St. Louis Public Radio, which opened its new $12 million building at Grand Center in June. The three-story, 27,000-square-foot building provides UMSL faculty and students academic and public meeting space.

About 16,800 students enrolled at UMSL in Fall 2011. Current undergraduate tuition is $265 per credit hour for Missouri residents and $717.90 per credit hour for out-of-state residents.
