UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. - Business owners in the popular Delmar Loop area of the St. Louis suburb of University City credit high police visibility for turning around a perception that young people posed a threat.
Sporadic incidents - assaults, a shooting and mob violence - drew attention to the Loop, though many business owners said the threat was overstated. Still, University City responded last year by imposing a 9 p.m. curfew for teens under the age of 17. Police also added extra patrols and placed security cameras at several spots.
City officials don't have statistics on the number of infractions, but told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the effort has paid off. Business owners agree.
