| 密蘇里州國際象棋三年級級別中之冠軍得主高文晟 |

Wilson Gao, a 3rd grade student at Mason Ridge Elementary School, won the 1st place of K-3 championship with the only perfect score of 6.0 at the 2014 MO State Scholastic Chess Championship on March 1st, 2014. This is Wilson’s second year of playing tournament chess. Last year, Wilson won the 4th place of K-3 section for IL All Grade Chess and 14th place of upper elementary for IL K-8 Chess Championship before his family relocated to Town and Country, MO.
就讀於Mason Ridge小學三年級的高文晟 (英文 Wilson Gao) 在三月一日剛剛結束的2014年度密蘇里州國際象棋（又稱西洋棋）三年級級別中以唯一一個六場滿分不敗的成績一舉奪冠。這是高文晟第二年參加國際象棋比賽。在去年一家搬來密州的Town and Country以前，高文晟曾獲伊州全年級的三年級級別的第四名和伊州八年級以下的二和三年級級別的第十四名。
Wilson showed his interest in playing chess about three years ago, and his father, David Gao who owns Arctic Food Services learned the game from internet and has been coaching him since then. As to why the success of Wilson, David credits a good balance between learning and having fun, more importantly, learning while having fun. For example, David will bring his family on a big vacation at least once every year. While at the vacation trip, his family will learn the local culture, history, business, and even weather or whatever the kids ask for. Unfortunately, just like other kids, Wilson likes to play video games which seem to be the only thing David is against these days. Thus, David uses video game minutes as a reward for Wilson’s good behaviors such as giving a helping hand to house chaos, being able to get a top three in any competitions, and etc.
高文晟大約在三年前開始顯露出對國際象棋的興趣，當時對國際象棋一竅不通的爸爸從互聯網現學現賣，至此就成了高文晟的國際象棋教練了。至於高文晟的成功，文晟的爸爸歸功於不要給小孩太大壓力，而要隨時隨地抓住機會啟發教育。比如，在全家每年一度的度假期間，爸爸總是會和小孩一起探討當地的風土人情，對小孩，文晟的爸爸也是有問必答。但是，就像其他小孩一樣，高文晟也很喜歡玩電子游戲機。他爸爸的對策就是當高文晟在家裡幫忙做家務或任何比賽得前三名時，用電玩的分鐘來獎勵他，而且也只能周末玩。
As to how to be a good supporting parent, David runs Arctic Food Services at day time and mentor his kids at night. David who holds a couple of Master degrees including an MBA from UIUC believes that a kid should try different things early on and who knows which one a kid will be interested in and good at later on. Thus, Wilson not only becomes good at chess, but also has won piano competitions two years in a row at the Mid-America Music Association festivals and some math competition as well. As to what is next, Wilson would like to get a national title in chess, but David would like him to have a balanced development including public speech and leadership where American kids typically shine.
關於怎樣才能更好地作為一個家長，擁有伊州大學香檳分校雙碩士的高文晟爸爸來說，是白天忙著管理自己的新長城海鮮公司，晚上忙著教育小孩。他相信讓小孩還小的時候，盡量讓他們體念一下不同的東西，不知道什麼時候他們會對什麼產生興趣。（言下之意就是反對用同一模式培養每一個小孩。）只要是對將來有益的，做家長的就盡力支持。因此，高文晟不光熱愛國際象棋，還在美中音樂協會 (MAMA) 的年度鋼琴比賽中連續兩年獲得獨奏獎，也在一些數學比賽中拿到好名次。當問及高文晟下一步要做什麼的時候，他還是希望能在不久的將來拿國際象棋的全國名次，他的爸爸倒是希望他能在美國小孩出眾的公共演說及領導才干中有所發展。
Chess is a mind sport which will help people, especially young kids, to really focus and learn different strategies, and develop problem solving skills. For any kids who are interested in learning chess, David recommends the St Louis Scholastic Center and Chess Club (Tel: 314-361-2437) at 4657 Maryland Ave, St Louis, MO, which only charges annual membership of $50 for those under 21 which includes free chess lectures offered by Grand Masters, discounts on chess tournament entry fees, and free access to chess club library. For those kids who are interested in playing scholastic chess competitions in the area, David says that the Gateway Chess League holds a series of USCF rated and unrated scholastic tournaments every year, and the entry fee to each of its tournaments is usually $10 to $15 per kid.
