Urban League Job Fair Attracts Crowd Of Employers And Job-Seekers Alike

A large crowd of eager job-seekers lined up at St. Louis Community College ag Florissant Valley Saturday for the Urban League's Job and Resource Fair. At least 90 companies, many with positions to fill, joined the fair, including BJC Healthcare, the Missouri Highway Patrol and St. Louis Community Credit Union.
Available jobs ranged across the spectrum of careers and education levels, from law enforcement to health care. BJC alone had a thousand jobs to fill.
"We have a plethora of jobs open, all the way from engineers to housekeeping (and) facilities," said Monique Bowens of BJC. "We're also looking for nurses."
BJC had laptops on hand for people to apply right at their booth.
Over at the St. Louis Community Credit Union station, Diane Giebly said her company was expanding and looking for tellers for their new branches.
Giebly said she was conducting short screenings of potential applicants, looking for people who can handle money and with those experience in customer service. She said the main requirement is that the people they hire like to serve.
"We're really big into financial education and solving our members' needs," said Giebly. "So we're looking for folks who like to serve in a front line capacity."
Florissant resident Joe Harris attended the fair looking for a job. He previously worked in the mortgage industry, and said he was looking for a new career path.
Harris said that he had handed out several resumes and was excited by the opportunity for a new job, despite not knowing exactly what kind of job he wanted. He said he was looking for more financial security, and a job that he would be happy doing.
The Urban League also offered resume writing classes, college information and other resources at Saturday's fair.
