Fur real: Cat cafe to open this weekend

Those of a certain feline purrsuasion will now have a special place to gather when Mauhaus Cat Cafe opens Saturday in Maplewood. Mauhaus, at 3101 Sutton Blvd., is St. Louis’ first permanent cat cafe.
It gained massive attention after owners Ben Triola, 31, and Dana Huth, 28, launched a Kickstarter in March asking for $15,000. Within days, the couple’s Kickstarter raised $36,147 from 925 backers from around the world. Total investment of their 1,400-square-foot space that’ll be home to 10 to 15 cats was not disclosed. Triola and Huth own the property.
Mauhaus will be divided into two sides, separated by an entranceway with double doors, with one side serving drinks and baked goods and the other featuring cats adoptable through Tenth Life Cat Rescue.
La Cosecha and Traveling Tea will supply the cafe’s drinks, including a custom Mauhaus tea that has mint, basil and yes — even catnip. The cafe developed its own menu that features a variety of global-inspired foods and vegan options.
“It’s a boutique cafe that has cats. It’s not a cat shelter,” Triola said.
The cafe will be open 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday-Sunday. Reservations are strongly recommended with limited walk-in availability. Reservations are made online and are $10, which will go toward a guest’s food and beverage purchase. And unlike other cat cafes, Mauhaus does not charge by the hour.
Triola and Huth said they had no unusual hurdles from the St. Louis County Department of Health to open a cat cafe.
“Without a doubt, we knew we wanted to open in Maplewood,” Triola said. “Immediately they were very receptive.”
It helped that the couple already owned a business in Maplewood, software design company Rampant Interactive, Huth said.
“They already knew us and knew what we were capable of,” she said.
Cat cafes began in Taiwan in 1998 and are popular throughout Asia. The first American cat cafe opened in Oakland, California, in 2014. Triola and Huth first visited a cat cafe while in Thailand on Christmas 2014.
“Even when we were there, we were like ‘This is too awesome to not have when we go home,’” Huth said. “Once we got back, we started planning it. It’s been a longtime coming.”
